Tradescantia 'Maiden's Blush'

28th June 2014

A new introduction with white bands on the new growth that make it very striking and slightly disorganised. I was given a single rooted stem last year and it has grown very fast in the Hedychium house. It seems to be fairly cold tolerant but would probably need a sheltered position planted outside (although the cheery Americans suggest it is hardy to zone 4).
The species is still unclear. It is sometimes listed as a form of T. fluminiensis but it is taller than the plants I know with sturdier, less fleshy stems. However, I only know the variegated T. fluminiensis so the green form may be different.
The foliage develops a pink tinge in winter and the stems are crowned with large but inconspicuous white flowers in summer.
