a large growing shrubby Acanthus with pink flowers. Its hardiness is still uncertain, I was told at Lower Kenneggy Nursery that it was expected to behave like
Acanthus sennii and die to the ground in winter to regrow in spring, but that it didn't manage to regrow. I have it planted by a south wall and it wasn't cut back during last winter. The Flora of the Democratic republic of the Congo says: "Large, vigorous, shrub-like perennial herb, up to several metres tall. Leaves large, oblong-elliptic, the coarsely undulate-dentate margins set with sharp prickles. Flowers in terminal spikes, bright pink. Native to Burundi, Rwanda, DRC, Uganda, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania." Rare Palm Seeds say: "This large, herby shrub forms slender stems with large, broadly lobed, spiky leaves and terminal inflorescences with showy purple flowers. Acanthus polystachyus is native to the mountains of eastern tropical Africa. It makes a robust ornamental shrub for tropical and warm temperate climates." |
