Large growing cultivar with bright orange spring growth and then orange autumn colour (with a dull green intermission).
Has grown rapidly and now keeps the orange colour throughout the summer. In autumn it adds some reddish shades in an elegant, delicate (un-inspiring) way." Gordon Harris says: "A clone with attractive spring foliage which is yellowish orange with tones of pink. Later in the season these turn rich green and in autumn they turn bright yellow and orange." Trees and Shrubs online says: "Young foliage pale orange-yellow with deeper coloured margins, later green, then yellow and orange in autumn. Leaves closely set, about 11⁄4 in. long and wide but somewhat larger on strong growths. Of comparatively dwarf habit, to about 4 ft (Vertr., p. 98)." Mr Maple says: "'Katsura' is one of the first trees to leaf out in the early spring. It blasts out of the gates with beautiful shades of orange and yellow. 'Katsura' is a very vigorous grower and can reach up to 15 ft in height in 15 years. The midsummer color is green and transforms into deep orange to red in the fall. Known as "a wig" in Japanese, it thrives in sunny to partially shaded environments. " |
