Surprisingly strong growing for a variegated form, making a small tree in time. The variegation is brightest on the new growth, but it has burnt rather badly in a pot.
In autumn it has grown a dull orange, which is a poor trade off for the seagull-shit springtime (sorry, I was feeling quite feisty when I wrote that). Mr Maple puts it more elegantly: "Acer palmatum 'Versicolor' is a broadleaf Japanese maple with soft green foliage often highlighted by creamy variegation, giving it a delicate, refined texture in the landscape. In 10 years, it typically reaches about 8–10 feet tall and 6–8 feet wide, developing a graceful, upright habit. Fall color is especially showy, with rich orange hues adding vibrant seasonal interest. This is the tree featured on the cover of the 1st and 2nd editions of Japanese Maples by J. D. Vertrees, making it a very rare and highly collectible selection." Trees and Shrubs online says: "Leaves mostly seven-lobed, splashed with white, pink-tinged markings of various sizes. Introduced by Siebold about 1860. It has also been known as A. p. septemlobum variegatum, A. p. roseomaculatum and A. p. Aokii. It is inclined to revert." Lazy S's Farm Nursery is quoted on Plant Lust saying: "A heat tolerant upright Japanese maple with fresh green leaves which are speckled with varying amounts of white streaks, blotches and fleck, which start out pink and slowly change to white. This variegation is subtle, more like the occasional treat rather than a riot of Variegation. Tolerates shade but loses much of the variegation. 'Versicolor' is a strong-growing, hardy form which can reach 25' feet, although 15-20' is typical. Fabulous Fall color starts bright gold changing to strong red." |
