Good large purple leaves. A pure bright red colour in autumn. The is something quite uncompromising about the way these large flat leaves colour. Gordon Harris says: "One of the atropurpureum group and makes an attractive plant. The leaves are reddish purple turning a bright carmine and scarlet in autumn. This is an upright growing small tree." Trees and Shrubs online says: "Leaves with seven long-tapered lobes reaching about halfway to the centre, bright reddish purple at first, bronzing in summer, red in autumn. A small tree (Vertr., p. 62)." Mr Maple says: "'Yezo nishiki' is a great mid-sized upright red Japanese maple. This cultivar leafs out in the early spring with brilliant shades of reds to purples. During the mid-summer months, 'Yezo nishiki' has more bronze undertone to the red coloration. In the autumn 'Yezo nishiki' lights up with beautiful bright orange to red that continues to intensify late into the season. 'Yezo nishiki' is a very old cultivar and is underused in many landscapes. This cultivar can reach 20 feet over time but is slow to reach that height. 'Yezo nishiki' is an excellent tree for anyone looking to add a splash of red color to their landscape." |
