I grew up with the double flowered form of Achillea ptarmica. I don't know where my mother got it from
but I don't ever remember her garden without it. It is one of those things that is so familiar that it drifts
into the background. This dwarf single flowered form was a surprise. I saw it at a distance in Derry Watkins nursery, Special Plants and I knew I needed one. It is bright, shining, vigorous and flowers for weeks in late summer. Wonderful. In the longer term it wasn't a great success here. Summers are too cool and wet for it to thrive but it was a great blast of nostalgia while it lasted. Gardeners Dream say: "Achillea ptarmica 'Nana Compacta', commonly known as Sneezewort 'Nana Compacta', is a delightful perennial that brings a delicate charm to gardens. Its compact stature and clusters of pure white flowers make it an excellent choice for borders, rockeries, and cottage-style gardens. Cotswold Garden Flowers said: "Compact bushy upright plant with lovely large grey-white flowers in broad heads Jun-Sep over dark green foliage, 30cm. Easy. doesn't describe so well but it's wonderful." |
