A tiny little green form that is popular in aquaria, but does well in a pot, though as it clumps up it loses all sense of tidiness
and makes a crust over the surface like a giant prickly lichen. This distinctive small form has been published as Acorus pusillus Siebold ex Miq. and A. gramineus var. pusillus (Siebold ex Miq.) Engl. however Plants of the World online does not recognise the taxon as distinct from A. gramineus and says: "The native range of this species is E. Himalaya to Japan and Philippines. It is a perennial or rhizomatous geophyte and grows primarily in the temperate biome." It is still sold to aquarists, usually under the cultivar name 'Pusillus'. Aqua-Fish.net say: "Acorus gramineus 'Pusillus', also known as Miniature Japanese Sweet Flag, is best suited for shallow, moisture-rich environments such as pond margins, marsh edges, or paludariums." |
