Alliaria petiolata
1st May 2019
A common, weedy, native brassica that smells like an onion. If that wasn't enough to enchant you then I can hardly imagine what would.
A delight when it appears as "Hedge Mustard" but there is a little part of me that is doubly delighted when I find someone who knows it as "Johnny-Jump-Up".
I'm sure that it has always been growing in the area, but I hadn't seen it until a few years ago, when a single plant grew in the pavement cracks outside the house.
I smiled upon it benignly and now it carpets the end of my car parking space with its pungent leaves and insignificant white flowers.
Long may it continue to do so (I don't think it has any plans to stop).
