Astilbe thunbergii
18th July 2015
Every now and then I get a bit carried away with the idea of a genus as much as with the plants themselves. Astilbe thunbergii and A. japonica
were the two species available to Georg Arends at the very end of the 19th century. The arrival of the pink flowered A. chinensis allowed him to start
rearing coloured hybrids (one of which has crept into the background here).
This isn't the original introduction, this one was collected during the Chungtien, Lijiang and Dali expedition in 1990 under the number CLD 1443.
