Berberis darwinii 'Nana'
5th July 2014
Berberisa darwinii is a bit of a monster. It is only admitted to gardens because of is annual display of astonishing flowers.
A dwarf form that flowered with the same profusion would be a wonderful thing. I am a Berberis lover and you can be sure that
when such a thing finally appears, I will be planting it.
In the meantime the best on offer is this sad little prickle-tuffet with neither the grace nor the flower-power of the full sized version.
I love it, but I'm not blind to its faults. Currently growing in a pot because it couldn't fend of a determined bramble or stinging nettle. It
would even struggle against a strategically placed red campion.
