Betula chichibuensis

9th May 2014

A small growing Birch species. I bought a seedling a couple of years ago and it is growing well in the Hedychium house. Before long it will have to go outside and it will hate the dank Cornish weather (generally Betula like it dry and bright).
A rare Japanese species from a small area on Mt Kamo-san in Gumna prefecture. In 1993 the population was recorded as 21 individuals. Plants are self incompatible so two are required to produce seed. Seed from the wild population is reported to have a low viability (less than 1% viable seed), suggesting the population is already highly inbred.
