Caltha polypetala

A vigorous species with large flowers on long trailing stems. Thirty years ago I planted a small piece in a pond in my mothers garden
and last year I fished out a piece for my own garden. It seems to be as vigorous in the border as it was in the pond.

This large growing species originates in the Balkans and the Caucasus and is sometimes treated as a subspecies of C. palustris.
Large yellow flowers, they must all be the same! It's a simple approach to taxonomy, I wonder why it isn't applied to buttercups?
