Clivia miniata Chinese Variegated

2nd September 2007

The first variegated Clivias seem to have occurred in Europe. Called 'Striata', it was very slow to divide, and people were slow to realise that a reasonable proportion of the seedlings would also be variegated. Plants were taken to Japan early in the 20th century, and from there to China. The Chinese have spent the last hundred years or so developing variegated strains with broad leaves. These are now starting to be exported to the rest of the world. The picture shows a representative group af middle quality plants. The highest quality plants have large yellow or white symetrical stripes spaced with shining dark green.
The best plants for breeding have narrow bands of white spread evenly through the leaf - because of the geometry of reproduction, this gives the highest proportion of variegated seedlings.

This plant shows that the variegatioin of the left side of the plant may not match the variegation of the right side!

Two of my seedlings have flowered for the first time this year, and the berries are now maturing.
