The Daruma Clivias were developed in Japan, and have very short, broad leaves.
The Monk Clivias are a strain of broad leaved plants that were developed in China, with longer leaves. Breeders were concentrating on the quality of the foliage.
Modern Chinese growers have crossed the two strains together, and the majority of seed and seedlings coming out of China at the moment have this parentage.
They are called Daruma Monk hybrids, or Anshan clivias. They have short broad leaves, often very deep green and glossy. The broad round leaf tips are a desirable feature.
