Crinum amoenum

5th August 2007

A species from the Indian subcontinent, particularly Nepal, Sikkim and Sri Lanka. I have seen the northern forms described as "quite cold tolerant", and certainly it seems to prosper in the southern USA. There is no reason to expect the Sri Lankan forms to be anything other than tropical.
I doubt I will ever be growing it outside in the garden. In a pot, it has grown well through the summer, but the foliage succumbs to botrytis as soon as the weather cools. I also have some doubt about its identity - this plant seems to have broader foliage than pictures of the species I have seen.
