A moderate sized shrub that has reliably produced a generous covering of flowers every spring. Bean says that is was raised in the USA
by Ellwanger and Barry.
George Ellwanger, a German immigrant to the USA and Patrick Barry, an Irishman founded a nursery in Rochester, New York State in 1840.
It prospered and expanded and then used its land to diversify into building houses. Eventually the nursery was swallowed by the
expansion of Rochester. The Ellwanger Garden still exists on part of the original site.
