A double flowered form of the species from China and Japan. It is very similar to 'Pride of Rochester' .

It survives with almost frightening tenacity. I felled the Eucalyptus behind it a couple of years
ago and it was profoundly squashed in the process, but it has bounced back (as has the Eucalyptus).

I think that this is the form introduced from China by Robert Fortune when he returned from there for the last time in 1861.
