Dianella nigra 'Margaret Pringle'
25th January 2009
Dianella nigra is one of the more elegant species in the genus. Unfortunately, it is not one of the hardiest species under my conditions.
This variegated form had not been popular at a local nursery and they were being sold off cheaply when I bought this one.
I planted it out in the garden immediately (it had become a little tired in a pot) and then we had the coldest winter for however many years it was,
and I am fairly sure this has been a casualty. It may still erupt from below ground, but I suspect its erupting days are over.

I don't think it can be relied on outside, but it is strong enough in the greenhouse and the leaves don't get
the brown spotting that disfigures it outside.
The white flowers are fairly insignificant but they are followed by pale blue berries that drop off if the plants are disturbed.

Collected in habitat by Miss Pringle on the west coast of South Island, New Zealand between Granity and Westport.
