Eccrempcarpus scaber yellow form
22nd July 2015
The Chilean Glory Floweris a pretty, low scrambling plant from Chile, Argentina and Peru. Easily grown from seed, it is a short lived perennial planted in a dry place in full sun.
The best one I ever saw was growing up a chain link fence by the side of a railway. I was sent some seed of the yellow form - I think they were a replacement for something that had all gone from a seed exchange.
I don't think I would have ordered it deliberately because in this climate it is going to be almost annual. Life's to short to faff around with things whose life's too short.
Whatever the reason, I ended up with a packet of seed so I sowed it, pricked out a dozen or so and gave all but this one to charity plant sales. It flowered freely all summer in the greenhouse
and didn't come back the following spring.
Colour varies from cream through yellow and orange to pink and scarlet - mixed seed is easily available. There aren't all that many members of the Bignoniaceae that would flower
in summer here but I think it is unlikely that I will revisit the species.
