Elaeagnus x ebbingei

The hybrid between E.macrophylla and E.pungens was first raised by S.G.A.Doorenbos in 1929
in his nursery at The Hague.
Two of the original seedlings are still in circulation (a labelled plant of 'The Hague' can be seen just outside the
lavatories at Wisley).
In full sun it makes a compact evergreen shrub that minds its manners, but in the shade it grows long arching stems
that will claw their way thirty feet or so up a tree and become rather tiresome. The strongly scented flowers add
invisible charm to the winter garden. It isn't always enough to justify the space it occupies.

This one has had its day. I have cut it down and although it will try to grow back again, I am not planning to allow it.
