Elaeagnus x ebbingii 'Limelight'
Archive entry 17.11.13

Twenty years ago I had a bit of a thing for Elaeagnus, which might be related to the lack of shelter on the site at that time.
I planted quite a lot of them, and though I have lost a few since a number of them remain. This one is very distinctive - some of the green leaved forms
will take a bit more effort to identify now that labels and memory have faded.
This is an excellent plant, but best in full sun. Grown in the shade it expands vigorously with long intertwining arms reaching into every available
finger hold and dragging itself upwards into a tangle of elastic clinging branches.

Scented flowers in mid-winter are almost enough to justify the space it occupies. I went to appreciate mine on
a quiet sunny day in winter and discovered that it had spread into a 3m blob gobbling up mspace like a variegated alien intent on world domination.
