Epiphyllum crenatum var kimnachi
20th July 2010
A large white flowered species previously identified as E.cooperi, and in the rapidly moving world of
Epiphyllum taxonomy who is to say how long it will remain here.
The species grows from Mexicxo to Honduras, where it was first collected in 1839 and was exhibited in flower in the RHS garden
in 1844. The variety kimnachi from Mexico honours Myron Kimnach, director of the Huntington Botanic Gardens for 25 years.
This may well be the only Epiphyllum that has actually been involved in breeding the hybrid Epiphyllums
(the rest of the genes, including all the colours, come from Disocactus).
