Erythrina herbacea

11th July 2014

A low growing species from the southern states of the USA and northern Mexico. It can make a small tree but it usually cut back to the ground and seen as a suckering shrub. I was given a seedling by a friend and I keep it warm and dry (probably a bit too dry) in the hope of getting flowers in the summer.

In habitat it flowers early in the summer on overwintering growth but with me it produced a late head of flowers after a warm spring period when it grew well.
