Erythronium dens-canis

After a couple of years, I still have nothing but a cluster of leaves in a pot. I think it is time
I found a space for it in the garden.

True to form, it took me several years to do anything about the situation, which was clearly unsatisfactory.
Eventually a space suddenly became appropriate at about the same time as I was walking up the garden with
a wheelbarrow and my (by then) large potful was moved to a better place.
Given a little more light it has been more compact and started to flower. As a result I went wild and put in another dozen
under the trees and I hope they will prosper. They went in as 'bulbs' in the autumn and I expect they will take a few years
to recover from the shock.
It is the only European species, found from Portugal to the Ukraine, and given the wide distribution it is not surprising that
it is quite variable. I would like to think that the new patch was made up of a mixture of forms but they are probably all a single vigorous clone
produced for the Dutch bulb industry.

It has done well beneath the trees and provided some exquisite details at the start of the year.
