Euphorbia wallichii

A compact species, the flowering stems spring from a thick tap root so it doesn't run about. Quite recently introduced to widespread cultivation when this picture was taken, this plant is long dead (I'm writing this brief note 30 years later).
Its natural range extends from Afghanistan along the Himalayas to China.
