Ferocactus hamatacanthus
24th October 2015
A small growing species, sometimes getting to the size of a football, with deep undulating ribs.
Hardy enough to survive in my greenhouse if I can keep it dry enough in the winter. It's not that I'm
reckless with the watering can, but I'm not so good at keeping the roof from dripping and it can be fatal
for most cacti.

Mine has a deep red throat to the flower which was unexpected but part of the species natural variation.
It has a distribution centred on the Chihuahuan Desert in northern Mexico, but it extends north into New Mexico and
southern Texas.
