Fritillaria imperialis is one of the largest species in the genus which grows on dry mountain slopes over much of central Asia, from Tukey to the foothills of the Himalayas.
I have wanted to grow it for a long time and it has strongly resisted all of my attempts. I can't seem to get the right environment. However, I have a childhood memory of it
growing with enthusiasm in a patch of boggy soil in a neighbours garden where the gutter overflowed. When I started planting the new herbaceous border it seemed the perfect time to have another try and in the first year it has flowered well. 'Sunset' is a new cultivar with an nAward of Garden Merit. It was registered in 2016 by VOF de Keizerkroon. |
