A large flowered species from titleitudes of about 3,000m on Mt.Kenya and Mt.Kilimanjari and also found in Madagascar at high titleitudes. It seems to be completely hardy.

Isobyl La Croix has recently clarified the origin of this plant (The Plantsman, vol 10 part 3, Sept 2011). It was grown by Tom Norman from seed
collected in Madagascar but it has been suggested that it might be a semi-naturalised hybrid from cultivation. It appears
to have G.dalenii in its ancestry.
