Gunnera magellanica
18th April 2014
A small, hardy, vigorous species of Gunnera from the southern tip of South America. Good in a boggy position, though it will spread rapidly.
Evergreen except in harsh winters. It is tiny (compared with the giants of the genus), there are several clones in cultivation and the red berries are produced frequently.
It has potential to be an invasive weed under some circumstances.
There was a time that I was enchanted by Gunnera and grew a lot more than I needed. Then I discovered that most of them had territorial ambitions that make them inconvenient
and now I wouldn't plant any of them deliberately. This one is in a pot and if I get a chance to give it away I will take it.
