Hatiora gaertneri
4th July 2006
A summer flowering epiphytic cactus. I find it a lot more troublesome than the Schlumbergera hybrids.

The species has a long and confused taxonomic history, and IU have just caught up with the idea that
Rhipsalidopsis as a genus has disappeared into Hatiora. It is a perfectly reasonable
change, but that doesn't mean I will rmember it has happened.

The name remains a little speculative in a world where new names appear frequently, possibly more
frequently than new plants. This is what I was brought up to call the scarlet orange one and I am going to
stick with it until I am shown better (though I accept it might now be a Hatiora).
It is a Brazilian epiphyte growinmg at altitudes up to 1,300m. I find it less cold tolerant than the Schlumbergera
but faster to recover from damage.
