Hydrangea macrophylla EARLY BLUE

30th July 2011

A compact cultivar raised for the Dutch pot plant trade and introduced in 2006. Large flower heads, it is being sold as EARLY BLUE but it has been blessed with the delightful cultivar name 'Hba 202911'. Poetic people, the Dutch.
It was blue when I planted it last year. Honest. It has been very pink this year, hopefully it is a passing fancy.

9th September 2012

The flowers are recovering their sense of blueness though there is still a distinctly grubby feeling to it. The sky may have fallen but it landed in the mud.

31st August 2013

This is the colour I was hoping for. The plant is back on form at last. It has made a good compact shrub, flowering very freely.

1st January 2018

Seedling raised by Niels Art in Aalsmeer, The Netherlands from two un-named selections. It was part of a breeding program aimed at developing compact cultivars with no requirement for vernalisation so that they would flower easily and rapidly in spring.
