Laureliopsis philippiana
2nd February 2009
There is a wonderful mature tree in Falmouth, and I have wanted to plant one in the garden for some time but
in cultivation it is a bit confused with Laurelia sempervirens (in trying to obtain this one, I have acquired both).
It is a bit prone to cold damage, so I would rather that things like this didn't happen too frequently!

My original plant succumbed to cold in the bad winter of 2010 but I have just been given this replacement and so far it has survived the cold.
It has been a bit more vulnerable to damage from deer but a stout cage around it seems to have solved the problem.
In habitat in Chile and Argentina it grows in moist or marshy soils often with its roots in water.
