Leucadendron uliginosum

18th July 2015

I was given a seedling by a friend who had raised them.

It has grown well in the Agave house and survived the difficult winter. It is as silvery as the Silver Tree, L. argenteum but rather straggly.

It grows naturally in a small region in the Western Cape. It is listed as "near threatened" because of the limited range, though it is quite abundant within its area. It is threatened by alien invasive species, particularly pine trees. It occurs on dry slopes and is susceptible to fire which kills mature plants, though seed survives.
It has grown well in the Agave house where it is very dry for most of the year. It has remained a long, straggling shrub. It might have formed a better shape with more light.
