In one of those happy chances that cheer up gardens, I was sent a big bag of bulbs of 'Gravetye Giant' as a gift
and they are just what I needed. I had a few planted under some trees, where they survived but did little else, and I wanted something for
the herbaceous border to make an early season surprise.
The cultivar was named after Gravetye Manor, home of William Robinson the populariser of wild gardening so it has a long history
of adorning 'natural' gardens.
