Leucothoe fontanesiana 'Makijaz'
27th May 2012
'Rainbow' is the oldest variegated Leucothoe. I like it but it is a little unstable. If you propagate
the bright variegated shoots you get brightly variegated plants, if you use the duller pieces
you get duller plants.
'Makijaz' was selected by Michal Kalunzinski in Poland and is a good compact form. It is said to be more resistant
to leaf diseases that can cause reddish marks and small areas of die back on all species.

As a mature plant it is denser and more compact than 'Rainbow' although my plants cannot be directly compared - 'Makijaz' grows in full sun while
my plants of 'Rainbow' are all in light shade.
