Magnolia grandiflora 'Edith Bogue'

2nd February 2009

I planted this Magnolia to replace the windbreak I have taken down. It is said to be the hardiest form of the species, and I hope it's true.

This is a slightly more cheerful picture, planted next to the stump of the pine tree I am hoping it will replace. It has had to survive another terrible winter, but it seems to have come through without significant damage (unlike Persea thunbergii a little further along, that was killed outright).

I'm not quite sure why I have a fixation on taking pictures of it in the snow, but here's another one. Perhaps I am subliminally emphasising that this is said to be the hardiest of the forms. It is growing well and past experience suggests that thay are quite slow as young plants but suddenly rush away after a few years.

Without flowers - no sign of those yet - the most interesting thing it does is catch snow on the leaves.
