Magnolia insignis
25th November 2011
I have been planting a few of the less hardy Magnolia species in the garden this year. I am
not convinced that they will survive, but if I don't try it, I will regret it.
Magnolia (Manglietia) insignis has a wide distribution in Southeast Asia, there is a lot of
variation in flower colour, from red through to white and probably some variation in hardiness.
This is a seedling, but will almost certainly be at the white end of the range. Plants have grown reasonably
well in some local gardens but I am probably pushing my luck a bit. It only went in this spring, and I may not have it
by next year so I am going to cross my fingers and try to enjoy the leaves while I can.
They may be a little ordinary, but this could be it's finest hour.
On a more positive note, there is a fine young tree at Caerhays Castle so I could be surprised.

Still with me and growing reasonably rapidly. Every year is going to be a worry but I am encouraged to try a few more
of the smaller evergreen Magnolia.
