Magnolia sapaensis

Archive entry 02.07.23

4th June 2012

A recently introduced and named species from North Vietnam. It is uncertain how hardy it will be and the first time I was offered a seedling I made a little squeeking noise and declined. Unfortunately it stuck in my mind and I had to return and get one.
Planted under some deciduous trees to provide cover, it has grown well and come through winter without damage. Early days.

It has now made a sapling aboiut 3m tall. When I planted it I was unsure of its hardiness so I chose a position in the shade of some mature trees. It has proved to be tougher than expected and the trees will have to be thinned to give it some light.
