Mahonia eurybracteata ssp. ganpinensis 'Soft Caress'
23rd November 2013
Mahonias are on the move. New introductions from China and Mexico have added excitement to a genus that was previously
green and prickly. The prickly aspect was holding them back commercially so this gentle form of M.eurybracteata
ssp. ganpinensis has been treated with commercial glee and astonishment. If it matures into a compact evergreen
without homicidal tendencies then it will be the next middle sized thing.
Introduced to the UK in 2012, I have yet to see a large specimen but young plants have produced typical heads of yellow flowers in late autumn
(but not mine). 'Plant of the Year' at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, 2013.
Raised by Ozzie Johnson and selected in 2001 it was released to the trade in the USA in 2006 through ItSaul Plants
in Georgia.
