Mahonia x media 'Buckland'

Archive entry 17.11.13

This may be 'Buckland', or I may be wrong. This plant had been subdued by some rather overgrown trees and their removal has allowed a resurgence. I have a number of Mahonia x media cultivars around the garden and their correct identification will take some more research.

I have planted a small 'Buckland' from a reliable source and I will wait to see if it ends up looking anything like this.

The fog of confusion is slowly lifting, and let's face it, that is a rare event. The first two pictures here are actually M.x media 'Lionel Fortescue'. I'm going to leave them here for the sake of comparision.
This picture shows the real M. x media 'Buckland'. Long racemes of flowers, branching occasionally at the base. They are arranged in a broad, flattened rosette as though some foolish person had sat on the flower head and squashed it flat. No sign of the person remains of course. They might have been foolish but obviously not insensate.
