Mitraria coccinea

1st June 2017

A low, scrambling Chilean shrub, the scarlet flowers in summer are very striking. It was introduced by William Lobb, working for the Veitch Nursery in 1846 so it was introduced a long time ago. Despite being easily propagated it isn't seen in gardens very often. It thrives in light shade and suffers if it dries out.

After a decade in the Hedychium house, I finally planted it out this year and it seems to have established, producing a few flowers in late summer.
