Moraea vegeta
19th April 2007
A very curious purple brown flower. The plant produces them freely in May and June, and they are followed by masses of small black seeds.
I am waiting to see if it will self seed around the place. From heavy clay soils in South Africa, and I hope that means it will be tolerant of winter wet!

It seems that it doesn't like being frozen solid in a pot of wet compost! Plants outside perished in the winter of 2008/9 although plants in pots in the greenhouse
don't seem to have been damaged.
Like any grower of bulbs under glass, I get a fair number of unexpected seedlings turning up in pots, and in one corner of the
greenhouse here, they are usually Moraea vegeta.
