A very old cultivar raised by H. J.Elwes.The parentage is recorded as N. ('Atrorubens' x versicolor) x 'Sir G. White'.
The RHS Dictionary of 1969 describes it as:
"Deep pink, tinged with purplish-mauve stripe".
The flowers open deep pink with a slightly orange tone and then develop a purplish mid stripe after a day or two. The filaments of the stamens are pink when the flower opens
but rapidly turn to a lavender colour.
