Nerine 'Ruth'
7th October 2015
There are two 'Ruth' s recorded. The first was raised by Edmund de Rothschild at Exbury from a cross between 'Carita' and 'Wellington Koo'.
Unfortunately in early descriptions it is "deep pink" while my plant is almost dangerously orange.
The second 'Ruth' is listed in the Barr catalogue for 1917 where it is described as:
"Glowing coral-scarlet with deep scarlet centre, nice open flower with waved petals."
Tony Norris seems to have listed the same thing in his catalogue for 1984 where he says:
"8 to 10 large florets giving a big and most beautiful open head with clear soft reddish orange segments slightly deeper at the base. Very long tapering stamens."
I think this is the one I am growing. "Glowing coral-scarlet" and "clear soft reddish orange" both seem to be gentle ways of skirting around the uncompromising orange truth.
