The identity of the plant in cultivation and the significance of this name are open to question. However in 2001, Ken Hall wrote in the Springbank Nursery catalogue:
"Award of Merit 1994. Flowers a week later than Fothergillii Major and has green rather than glaucous foliage. Stems to 2' long, fine domed heads 5" across, with 10 to 12 Dutch vermillion florets."
My plant seems to be the same one he describes, and presumably also the plant that gained an Award of Merit.
Although accorded botanical rank in the 19th century, Graham Duncan doesn't accept any lower ranked taxa within the species in his 2016 treatment. The plant in cultivation,
at least in the UK, seems to be a single clone.
