Osmoglossum pulchellum
15th January 2023
A white flowered species of orchid closely allied to Oncidium. Part of my search for orchids that will tolerate the low temperatures that occasionally occur in
my greenhouse. I wanted to try this one after reading a report from a Dendrobium grower in Australia who had just suffered an extreme (for the region) frost.
He lost a lot of Dendrobium but described the Osmoglossum as indestructible.
Grows naturally from Mexico through to Costa Rica at altitudes up to 2,600m and it is very tolerant of low temperatures.
This picture shows the plant four weeks after a very severe radiation frost. It has been slightly damaged but not killed (unlike some of the Oncidium hybrids).
