Paeonia daurica ssp. coriifolia

4th April 2019

A subspecies of the variable P. daurica, that comes from the western Caucasus. I bought a small seedling in 2019 and it has grown well in a tub, and reached flowering size. The fantastic dark colour of the foliage persists with me well into the summer.
The subspecies is a diploid (2n=10) confined to the west and north-west Caucasus at altitudes below 1,100m where it grown in deciduous or mixed forest. It differs from the other subspecies of P. daurica in having red petals and leaflets that are glabrous or only sparsely villose on the underside.
