Panicum virgatum 'Northwind'

15th September 2012

I am not generally impressed with grasses. There are too many of them, they all look the same and there is no end to the horde of photographers prepared to squeeze a living from overgrown turf by obscuring their (many) defects with dishonestly attractive edited pictures.
Perhaps that is as much as I need to say. I am not generally impressed.
However, I'm not prepared to dislike them and stick my head in the ground to avoid them. We have to live with them, and perhaps familiarity will ease contempt.
'Northwind' came my way in a moment of tolerance, although it looked like a broken bale of straw in a pot. Given some space and moisture it has grown into a stiffly upright column, as lush as turf and better furnished than any lawn of mine. I haven't got as far as calling it decorative but it is an interesting shape and makes a good background.
Introduced by Roy Diblik of Northwind Perennial Farm in Wisconsin (and I am slowly coming to appreciate its merits).
