Papaver orientale 'Patty's Plum'

15th June 2010

I have been trying some oriental poppies in the herbaceous border to offset the shiny linear leaves of the Hemerocallis. 'Patty's Plum' comes from the Somerset Nursery of Patricia Marrow where it was a chance seedling some time in the eighties. I remember her talking about it, but I don't think I saw it in flower until it achieved the mega-stardom it now enjoys. It has been followed by a number of other seedlings in the purple-lilac colour range but this is still my favourite.
This is a old flower and it has faded rather (as they all do) from the promised plum.
