Parodia leninghausii

19th July 2017

I like Parodia leninghausii, it is prickly without being mean. If you take liberties with it then it will spike you, but it won't fill your skin with broken barbs that irritate for days. It will just spike you. It makes a good specimen and it flowers easily and reliably. If only all cacti behaved as well!
The species is endemic to Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil where it grows associated with rock outcrops in hilly grassland at elevations up to 1300m. During the winter temperatures in habitat can approach freezing and it has certainly been below zero in my greenhouse, without damage. I was given my plant in 2013 by a friend in the local branch of the BCSS when it grew too big for her greenhouse, and I suspect that it had spiked her once too often.
